    I would like to leave a comment on the Carriage Horse show, but cannot seem to link to anything but previous show 178. I enjoyed your discussion on the Carriage Horses. I think there is nothing wrong with the antique cars and they can be a great addition for NYC. But to allow the claim by Carly Knudsen to go unchallenged, that the carriage horse are abused, is unfair reporting and giving voice to her agenda, with not so much to the other side of the argument, except for a somewhat drowned out voice of Glenn’s. We all know that situations of less than perfect horse care are dutifully overlooked in all other parts of the country, as we consider that all horseman do the best they can, best they can afford, best they know how…sometimes until they learn better, sometimes till it takes months or years to work your way through medical or lameness issues, sometimes until the simple and obvious solution becomes apparent after way too much time searching for the complicated solution has proven fruitless. If this forgiveness is extended to everyone else, but not to NY Carriage horses, then the argument must remain the primary one of long hours and unsafe conditions. Given the fact that you opened the show with an unsafe story in a driving horse show ring but made no mention of shutting down shows to protect the horses…..then safety, but only in NYC, is really all you are advocating. I did hear Glen mention that accidents can happen anywhere, no discussion ensued of that specifically. Then it seems OK that Carriages in Savannah are OK. But not in NYC. Is it really all that different? The track record for accidents in NYC is less than that for the Amish? They drive their horses into the night from long way out in Lancaster county to visit in town hospitals, treks that last all night ( I am from Lancaster, I see this). Should we ban Amish? So the narrowing of what part of the argument is specific to New York becomes smaller and smaller. Maybe down to the long hours and how the horse can’t catch a nap on the streets. So OK, that one is a condition specific to NY. Even though I see napping occurring on the street, my word against yours. I guess the point I am trying to make is….you can’t call this ABUSE. And that is the key word being applied to this argument over and over. Abuse. Just be sure that nobody will ever want to shut down your barn and take your horse away from you and letting you instead enjoy a nice job driving an antique electric car under the guise of doing what is best for your horse. Because I guarantee they can make some circular mish mosh of horrors about what you are not doing correctly, and turn that into an argument that will convince all your non horse owning neighbors that you should have your rights stripped and your business or hobby closed for your horse’s best welfare. Stopping the carriage industry via PETA: bad, but stopping the carriage industry by NYCLASS: good? How does that make sense? I have a hard time believing that any horse owning person (Bee) would ever endorse the workings of any organization that seeks to stop any horse business. None of us are immune. None of us are always correct about how we care for horses. Any of us can be maligned as abusers. And at the very end of your show, Glenn mentioned about SOPA internet law, about not throwing the baby out with the bathwater, why is it OK to do scorched earth with the Carriage horses, especially carriage horses? These are your fellow colleagues, they are NOT, separate from you. I think we make horrible mistakes when we view those who practice horsemanship differently as “other” and seek to take their rights away. – Thank you, Barbara
