Blog of the Week – Hopelessly Horseless

We came across another Horse Blog that we feel you should add to your list to check on weekly. It is run by a very nice girl in New Jersey. I know that is not usually a state most people associate with horses, but New Jersey is not all like Newark. Nicole is a geat writer and you can find her Blog at hopelesslyhorseless.blogspot.com.

Nicole’s Bio:

Horses have been my obsession for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a typical urban New Jersey city so I really have no explanation for where that infatuation came from. My appetite for reading equestrian themed books and magazines often led my classmates to tell me that I would one day turn into a horse. I lived for the days when my family would take trips to watch harness racing at the nearby Meadowland’s Racetrack. What everyone thought would be a phase has turned out to be a passion that has only increased exponentially.

For a time, I was an equine studies major at Centenary College. Unfortunately my equine college career was not meant to be. I am now majoring in Business at St. Peter’s College. Once I earn my MBA, I hope to open a small chain of holistic pet stores. I ride whenever I can but it is not nearly often enough.

I started my blog as a way to vent my frustration at being so hopelessly horseless. I knew that there must be other people like me who wish they could have a horse in their lives but for one reason or another are unable to. I hope that I can eventually develop the blog into a full scale website and support network for the hopelessly horseless.

Thanks so much for featuring my blog! New Jersey is actually a pretty horsey state (my county not included). We have more racehorses than Kentucky does. :)

I grew up “hopelessly horseless” in NJ too. I have since owned a few of my own, as well as been a trainer of carriage driving horses, Saddlebreds, Hackneys, Rocky & KY Mountains, etc. I am once again horseless, but please never feel hopeless. My soulmate horse was actually given to me by people I hardly knew. There are a million ways to have fun around horses without owning one too. I have worked for a couple associations at the KY Horse Park, traveled & worked at all sorts of shows all over the US & Paris, France, worked at one of the leading horse hospitals in America, & had many other great horse adventures.
Currently I am Equine Sales Manager for manufacturer of horse grooming products, & have my own horse collectibles business. AND I will own another horse again when the time is right.
P.S. NJ has more horse per square acre than KY, & has had a strong Horse Council & state Equine Advisory Board for far longer than KY has.
    Best wishes for staying hopeful,
    Caryn, Lexington, KY

I am living in Arizona now but grew up in NJ and moved to CA when I was 27 yo. I yearned and begged for a horse while I was growing up. My parents were in business and said no even though we had plenty of land (rural Hunterdon Co) to put them on. I finally went behind my parents back and bought a retired pacer for $100 (this was many years ago lol). Well, needless to say, I got in trouble, was grounded when they found out I bought this horse and also lost the horse. They gave the horse back to the people that owned it (a doctor). They almost got into a lawsuit over it. I never got a horse until I was in my 40s. By then I had moved to AZ. I was married then and we enjoyed two horses before we split up and I moved to another town so that I could afford to keep my lovely mare. I did finally make a trade with my ex for the other horse that he had as he was not interested in owning horses by then. It is true what they say, “I traded my husband for a horse, I got a good deal”.

Since then I’ve purchased 2 more horses (arabians) for my endurance riding habit. I rode endurance in AZ and NV for about 7 years. Had a great time, learned a lot about horses and I became obsessed with it. I also did competitive trail riding. I finally was force retired when my company shut down and I have been traveling. That was about 3 years ago. It’s now time to start riding again. I’m about to turn 62 later this year. I hope the old bones can handle it.

BTW, yes I also read that NJ had more horses per capita than any other state in the US. I guess it still holds true today. Had I stayed in NJ I never would have been able to afford horses. It’s interesting how your life takes little turns here and there and you end up doing what you wanted to do in the first place.

    Always keep the horsey faith!!!!
